STRATFORD SON TO SARTORIAL SUCCESS FOR ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
You may have noticed our new installation on International Quarter London’s Endeavour Square. At first glance, it’s a cacophony of images and colour but look closely and you’ll see subtle nods to Stratford and East London’s rich cultural and industrial history.
An image you’ll see dotted throughout is the skull. The skull is an image that’s synonymous with McQueen. Printed scarves, shoes and accessories emblazoned with the skull were a staple sight throughout the noughties.
Although born in nearby Lewisham, McQueen moved to Stratford when he was a year old, living with his mum, dad and five siblings. He went to school in the borough, before dropping out to pursue his love of art and fashion.
But did you know, before he started his first apprenticeship on Savile Row, before his stint in Milan and before he started his MA in fashion design at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, McQueen took his A-Level in art at Newham College.
From 12pm–3pm on Tuesday 28th May, join the Fashion and Tailoring Department at Newham College for an interactive open day. The event will take place at the College’s Fashion and Textile Museum, London Bridge.
On the day, take part in an interactive workshop demonstrating the kind of topics the department teaches, and speak to staff about the courses on offer. For more info and to register, visit the Eventbrite page.
